Detalle del caso
Project Overview

In much of rural Congo a mobile phone is not a luxury — it is the only bank and the only emergency line. Yet many small communities still live on the wrong side of the coverage map. This project documents the deployment of a 20W tri-band 900/1800/2100MHz wireless repeater in a village in Congo with roughly 800 residents across approximately 15,000 m², and how a properly engineered outdoor system turned a weak, unstable signal into full bars over the whole settlement.

Project Snapshot
Item Detail
Location Rural village, Congo
Population served Approx. 800 residents
Coverage area Approx. 15,000 m² (1.5 hectares)
Equipment 20W tri-band repeater, 900/1800/2100MHz
Scope of work Site survey, network design, installation, commissioning
Construction time August 2024
Outcome Full signal bars across the village; stable calls; significantly faster 4G

The Challenge: A Community at the Edge of the Network

The village sits at the outer fringe of the nearest macro cell. Before the project, residents had to walk to one corner of the settlement — or climb higher ground — to catch one or two bars. The result was a familiar pattern:

  • Dropped calls, especially indoors and at peak hours
  • 4G data that barely loaded — time-outs, failed mobile money transfers
  • No reliable indoor coverage in homes built with brick, concrete or metal roofing
  • Economic cost: traders could not confirm prices, families could not reach clinics, students could not study online

In a settlement like this, most calls are made outdoors, which is why area-wide coverage, not just indoor coverage, was the design goal.

Every successful repeater project starts with measurement. Our engineers walked the settlement logging signal on all three bands, identified the dominant donor cell and checked antenna isolation. The layout is donor-first and coverage-driven.

The design principles applied were:

  1. Donor link first: a high-gain directional Yagi was aimed at the serving base station on a mast, giving a clean donor signal above the noise floor.
  2. Balanced link budget: the 20W (43dBm) output was matched to the measured donor level so the repeater amplifies signal, not noise.
  3. Coverage rather than power: several service antennas with controlled down-tilt covered the full 15,000 m² evenly, avoiding hot spots.
  4. Practical survivability: outdoor-rated enclosures, grounding, lightning protection and humidity-rated cable.
Equipment: 20W Tri-Band Repeater (900/1800/2100MHz)

One unit covers three bands, which matters where operators and services sit on different frequencies:

Band Typical Service Supported
900MHz GSM voice, wide-area rural coverage
1800MHz LTE / 4G data, high-capacity traffic
2100MHz 3G / LTE capacity layer

Key advantages: 20W output to overcome path loss, automatic gain control, and a passively cooled aluminium housing.

Installation in the Field
  • Mast erection and donor antenna alignment with the serving cell
  • Low-loss feeder routing with drip loops and UV-resistant ties
  • Repeater mounted in a shaded, ventilated position with proper grounding
  • Service antennas covering homes, the meeting area and shops
  • Gain optimisation, isolation check, walk test and caretaker training
Results: Full Bars Across the Whole Village

Metric Before After
Signal bars (outdoor) 1–2 bars, location dependent Full bars across the coverage area
Indoor signal Mostly no service Reliable indoor coverage
Voice calls Frequent drops, redial needed Stable, clear calls
4G data speed Very slow, time-outs Significantly faster and usable
Coverage footprint Isolated spots only Approx. 15,000 m² served

The system went live in August 2024; the walk test confirmed full bars throughout the settlement, with better call stability and internet speed reported immediately.

Why It Matters Beyond the Technical Numbers

For 800 people, full-bar coverage is an economic upgrade: mobile money works first time, traders quote real prices, students reach online lessons, and clinics can be reached by phone.

Project Capability: Custom Signal Coverage Solutions

As one of the source repeater factories, we build complete coverage systems, not just hardware. Our engineering team undertakes:

  • Fiber optic repeaters for long-distance, large-scale coverage
  • Indoor signal distribution systems (DAS) for buildings, malls and campuses
  • Large-area indoor and outdoor coverage projects
  • Private networks: TETRA, PDT, DMR, P25, GSM-R
  • LTE 4G / NR 5G custom signal solutions

Send us your site conditions and coverage targets, and we will return a tailored design, link budget and bill of materials.

Conclusion

From a one-bar fringe to full-bar coverage over 15,000 m², this Congo village project shows what a properly engineered 20W tri-band 900/1800/2100MHz repeater system can achieve in rural Congo.
